In FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) a narrow strip of scalp is removed from the donor area. It is divided under the microscope into follicular units, which are then implanted in the recipient area. The donor area is closed with a suture that leaves a fine linear scar, usually hidden by the hair.
When it may be considered
It may be an option when a large number of grafts is needed in one session, when the person prefers not to shave the donor area, or in specific cases assessed by the doctor. Strip width is limited to protect healing.
Planning and follow-up
Planning follows the same principles as FUE: area of each zone, target density, donor capacity and number of sessions. Follow-up includes removal or check of the stitches and reviews at 2, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months.
The choice between FUT and FUE is made at the consultation, with an explanation of the risks, alternatives and type of scar of each technique.
